The Charities: Flying Colours

Yeovil District Hospital is running a £2.4m fund-raising campaign to support a major planned investment in enhancing the Women’s Hospital.

The Women's Hospital is an integral part of Yeovil District Hospital and adjoins the main building. The Trust will be improving and updating the 42-year-old Women's Hospital building to provide an environment that matches the high standard of care they provide.

It is now hoping to raise  £2.4m from the community to enhance the Women's Hospital which will benefit around 10,000 women of all ages from across South Somerset, parts of Dorset and Mendip, who use it each year.

  • Support anyone affected by the death of a baby;
  • To work in partnership with health professionals to improve the quality of care and services offered to bereaved families; and
  • To promote research and changes in practice that could help to reduce the loss of babies' lives

Training Diary

With only 124 days to go until the first leg of the 230 mile challenge begins, both Simon and Ross are training hard. With the evenings drawing in, both have taken well to the early morning schedule.

Tuesday 29th November

This morning, Ross completed his second marathon (26.2 miles) in as many days, the man is a machine!.

Although he rested this morning after a solid 10 mile run yesterday, Simon has just returned from doing 10 x Henford Hill repeats (over 3000 feet of climb) in 50 mins: Strength training.

Wednesday 30th November

Rest Day (very important to let the body recover)

Thursday 1st December

To start the festive season as he means to go on, Simon hit the road again tonight, running a cool (freezing in fact) half marathon (13.1 miles).

Thursday 8th December

Simon's training has been slow going the last week, for a very special reason;

At 9:50am on Tuesday 6th December, Chloe Baker (with Support from Simon) gave birth to Lennon Sol Baker (6lb 5ozs)

Congratulations!!

Ross, on the other hand, doesn't have such a good excuse so he headed out for a 10 mile run (incline training).

Monday 19th December

With Babyshambles the soundtrack to tonight's run, Ross complete a cool, crisp 7 miles run. Only 104 days to go, keep up the good work guys!

Tuesday 20th December

"We're running in the rain, we're running in the rain...."
Finally, after weeks of training individually, Ross & Simon hit the roads together for a 10k run in the rain.

Saturday 7th January

The boys headed out on a mixed trail/road run along the south coast today and rewarded themselves with a 'fresh' ice bath in Weymouth!

Sunday 8th January

20 miles today, 1,100 feet of climb - 5000 calories burnt (That's the Christmas pounds gone!)

Today Simon squeezed in 5 'Stone Lane' hill repeats at lunch. It was designed for it: 4 mins hard push going up, 3 mins active recovery down!

Sunday 22nd January

Monday 23rd January

No time for Monday Blues with these lads:

12.75 miles today in 1 hours 31 mins (7.16 min/miles)

Tuesday 24th January

Tough couple of days training already this week, so just a mere 11.15 miles today in just 1 hour 20 mins.

Running for Sol

In April 2012, Simon Baker and Ross Surey are planning to run the length of Wales in 5 consecutive days. That's 230 miles in 120 hours!

They are raising money for the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity (Sands) and 'Flying Colours' for Yeovil Women's Hospital.

Why?

Solomon Baker    20.10.2010

Simon and his wife Chloe were almost 34 weeks pregnant and eagerly awaiting parenthood when Solomon had to be delivered by emergency caesarean. Despite the efforts of all the staff, he was born sleeping and could not be woken.

The support they received from the staff at Yeovil Women's Hospital and Sands Charity was invaluable in helping them cope with their loss. These two charities need your support so that they can continue to support bereaved parents as well as fund research to reduce the incidence of stillbirth.

They also received a tremendous amount of support from family and friends. One of these friends, Ross Surey, has help develop the idea of running the length of Wales. Together, Simon and Ross decided this was a challenge that would push them to the limit and hopefully assist with raising a massive sum of money for Sands and Flying Colours.

If you would like to support these two with this incredible challange please donate here:
